Displaying strong creative leanings from an early age it was not until her late teens that ZE was to discover a voice that would demand her attention, nurturing and ultimately public expression.
During her teen years her interest and involvement in the creative arts was extensive and sustained - dance (tap & contemporary, talent contests) drama ( Mountview Theatre School, Sylvia Young, National Youth Music Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe). Alongside these pursuits ZE would continue to write songs at home and school (Year 9 Music Award) and perform covers at school concerts. There were already signs that singing would evntually become her primary creative focus.
In '93 she auditioned for a place at the popular Weekend Arts College in North London and was accepted for contemporary dance, drama and the Level 2 singing class. The following year she was encouraged to join the Advanced Level vocal class.
In '95 important decisions had to be made. Performing arts school or 'regular' University? In the end her next three years were spent at Warwick University where, as President of the African-Caribbean Society, she would setup an accomplished accapella quartet 'AC Harmony' with fellow undergraduates, performing at University functions. In her final year she also provided support vocals for the Christian Union worship team.
In 1998 ZE was now the proud recipient of a University honours degree but by now it was clear that her singing and songwriting were not just cathartic hobbies but had deeper objectives and origins. A church-goer since the age of 14, her time at Warwick, where she met like-minded peers, produced a more informed and significantly strengthened faith. The end result? The quiet but respectful acknowledgement of a God-given challenge to use her God-given talents of singing and songwriting for purposes higher than her own.
